A word from our Chairman

A new Pool.

We’ve now settled into the Highgrove pool. The feedback I have received is that it is a much better pool than Gurnell. The pool is 32% bigger and much deeper than Gurnell. Those in training are finding it far less cramped and minor accidental bumps are no longer happening. Alas the time slot is not good and most of us are finding the lack of beer at the end of the night a bit of a pain.

In 2009 two new swimming pools will be opened within 5 miles of Highgrove. These are our much-loved Swimmerama and the Hillingdon House Farm. I’m hoping these pools will take the pressure off of Highgrove and an earlier slot will become available.

The staff at Highgrove have warmly welcomed us. There have been none of the administration mistakes we saw at Gurnell and this has helped us settle in quickly. We have been offered storage in their plant room for our noticeboard and the newly acquired steel cabinet for the club’s masks and fins. My thanks to Dave Broad and his company for sorting the lock and cutting a new set keys for us.

We have also used the lecture room at the pool for the Life Saver Award theory and exam. The Life Saver Award continues as we try and get more through. To date Angela Wymer and Dave Watkiss have passed. Julie, Christine, Jane and Janet have still a little work to do.

Congratulations to Dave and Davina on their expectant arrival.

One of nicest things about taking in new divers into the sea for the first time is the way they come back beaming and saying things like: “Wow! That was great! Nothing like the pool or Wraysbury!.

They are of course absolutely right as we discovered in Weymouth. The place was alive with Dogfish, Rays and Cuckoo Wrasse; and the wrasse just sat there knowing you hadn’t brought your camera, damn it! Thanks to Dave Worthy for being my buddy!

The Photo Competition –

Is up and running with some new fancy web pages to preview the photos. Please find some time to have a look and vote at http://www.esac.org.uk/Competition.asp
